There are almost 7,000 languages in the world. Nearly 2,300 of those languages do not have even a word of Scripture. That is 196 million people that are without access to the transforming power of the Word! Wycliffe Bible Translators is committed to making God’s Word accessible to all people in a language that speaks to their heart. Their vision is “to see a Bible translation program in progress in every language still needing one by 2025” (www.wycliffe.org).
Ryan Pennington is in Papua, New Guinea as a linguist-translator. His job consists of learning the language of a people group, analyzing their grammar and phonology, developing a culturally acceptable orthography (alphabet), training natives to carry on translation work, and translation of the Scriptures. Ryan is the son of Mark and Karen Pennington, and he did much of his growing up in our church.
Crystal Penninton is a literacy specialist. Her job consists of developing and implementing a literacy program to generate interest in and commitment to reading the translated Word, possible assistance in the development of a culturally acceptable orthography, teaching native speakers to read and write their own language, and working with community and church leaders to promote use of the translated Bible.
